"Triumph over Trials - the Essence of Aviation Success" was an article Megan Ryan wrote for AviNation in our Winter 2024 edition. Shown here on the cover (right) with her friend, Megan's journey has continued to evolve and you can catch her update in the video below.

Scholarships are always an important component for many so we've included information about a program from Epic Flight Academy as an example of what is available to those even in high school.

For those young ladies that are drawn to getting their hands dirty working on projects, then Be Athenian may be their tribe. The organization's upcoming Mission Mars event would be of interest to watch via livestream for classrooms too!

Lori Cline, a retired commercial airline captain with 40 years experience, now with Delta Professional Services, shares her "you do you" advice in our AviNation Tram Talk video below. Did you know Lori holds the distinction of being the World’s Youngest Airline Captain? Lori checked out in the left seat with Atlantis Airlines on December 29th, 1983 on her 23rd birthday which is the minimum age which any Airline Transport Rated Pilot may fly as Captain!

Hey Jrs. and Srs. in High School...
$80K in scholarships is up for grabs

from Epic Flight Academy

Do you know someone with their heads in the clouds? Maybe they’re dreaming about a career in aviation!

In 2024, Epic Flight Academy will award $80,000 in scholarships to U.S. high school juniors and seniors for FAA flight training and aircraft mechanic training. Students must apply by October 1st. They can apply online at the link below.

Epic has five FAA-approved flight schools (New Smyrna Beach, FL; Ocala, FL; Tallahassee, FL; Jacksonville, FL; Tucson, AZ) and two FAA-approved aircraft mechanic schools (New Smyrna Beach, FL; Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport). Scholarships are used to offset tuition costs for training.

Epic’s scholarship awards and career event will be held on November 9, 2024 at the New Smyrna Beach, Florida campus. Winners are not required to attend the event in person, although they and their families are invited. Many of Epic’s airline and college partners attend the event to share further opportunities.

Epic will award 5 pilot scholarships and 2 aircraft mechanic scholarships. Students will find the requirements (e.g., letters of recommendation) and application form on the website. A judging panel will contact semi-finalists for a final interview before awards are announced.

Epic Flight Academy is an FAA-approved flight school founded in 1999 that has trained thousands of pilots from more than 100 countries. In 2020, Epic added FAA-approved aircraft mechanic schools. Epic partners with numerous airlines and aviation companies for career pathways.

Since 2016, Epic has awarded more than $360,000 to 27 high school students. Students are encouraged to visit Epic’s website for more details.

Words of Wisdom
from World's Youngest Airline Captain Record Holder!
Jump on the AviNation Tram and learn from Lori Cline, a retired commercial airline pilot, who shares her aviation journey and inspiring advice of overcoming many "firsts", airline mergers, and personal growth. After retiring from the left seat, Lori was recruited by Delta Professional Services - Delta Aircrew Training Center supporting the Airline Transport Pilot - Certification Training Program (ATP-CTP).

Be Athenian
What does it mean to "Be Athenian"?

Athenians know their super powers. We are an online community of like-minded, STREAM-loving girls who like getting our hands dirty. We are gifted in the classroom and unstoppable in the shop. Dirt on our hands? Proves that we aren't scared to get in there and learn. The hum of gears moving? For us, the sound of knowledge.

One of our projects, the Athenian “Mission to Mars: Space Diary” Contest inspired by NASA engaged students across the United States in an immersive creative writing experience that resulted in the Top 10 entries being published in a book which will be launched on National STEM Day at the San Diego Air & Space Museum on November 8, 2024.

Through research, recorded interviews, writing prompts, and Q+A sessions with NASA subject matter experts, registered students ignited their imagination and invented, through their writing, a vision of their own "mission" to the Red Planet twenty years from now. This Athenian contest has students dreaming of possibilities and helping to imagine our future in space.

We have a variety of ways for your school, classroom and students to get involved!

  • Your classroom can join us for the Press Conference on November 8th via livestream.
  • Your librarian can register to receive a free copy of the book.
  • Would your classroom or school like an autographed copy of the book? What would you do to be one of the five schools across the USA to receive this special edition book?

Don't miss this opportunity to inspire young minds with the incredible stories of our future space explorers. Register today!

Cover of a children's book with cartoon eagles
My Little Eagle: Theo Learns to Fly is an amazing aviation-inspired story written by Merici Huggins about a little eagle (Theo) who could not fly because his wings were too short. Theo soon realizes that there are other ways to fly and make his dream come true. The story is meant to entertain and inspire children of all ages to believe in themselves. It is filled with lessons about self-reliance, facing fears, overcoming challenges and disabilities, and achieving goals. It is also meant to spark an interest in airplanes and aviation in children.
